The Cobalto Verde project applies this biotechnology to extract metals associated with pyrite in IOCG (iron, copper, and gold oxide) mining tailings, which are predominant in the Coquimbo and Atacama regions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pyrite is a mineral that causes significant environmental problems due to its potential to produce acid mine drainage when it comes into contact with water and oxygen, as occurs when it rains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By feeding on the iron and sulfur that make up pyrite, microorganisms not only release the metals of interest, but also contribute to eliminating this environmental liability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-396\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 30px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cobaltoverde.cl\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250814_125209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cobaltoverde.cl\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250814_125209.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/cobaltoverde.cl\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250814_125209-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cobaltoverde.cl\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250814_125209-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cobaltoverde.cl\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250814_125209-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cobaltoverde.cl\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250814_125209-1536x865.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kobold Consortium for the recovery of valuable metals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To recover cobalt and other valuable metals from mining tailings and concentrates, researchers at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/csb.unab.cl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Systems Biotechnology at Andr\u00e9s Bello University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isolated a specific consortium of biomining microorganisms that they named Kobold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The microorganisms that make up this consortium come from samples taken from mining processes in the Atacama Region and were stabilized in the laboratory through a \u201cdomestication\u201d process, which included work in flasks, bioreactors, and columns to ensure consistent growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kobold consists of three main strains: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acidithiobacillus caldus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leptospirillum sp<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the laboratory level, Cobalto Verde technology has achieved significant results:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 70% cobalt recovery and 65% iron recovery were achieved in flasks agitated for 15 days of operation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cobalt recoveries of up to 93% have been achieved in the bioleaching of tailings samples in column tests.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to cobalt, the bioleaching process allows for the recovery of other valuable metals associated with pyrite, such as nickel, copper, zinc, and iron.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the Kobold consortium and the bioleaching method developed are presently under patent review process <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eldesconcierto.cl\/2025\/08\/28\/ciencia-y-mineria-proponen-nuevas-oportunidades-podriamos-situar-a-chile-como-el-segundo-productor-mundial-de-cobalto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Chile and 157 other countries.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-397\" style=\"display: block;
